Our absentees are more important than the Black Stars players who are missing – Gambia coach

The Gambia assistant coach Abdul Jammeh believes Ghana’s long list of unavailable players will not have a major effect on Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra.

Ghana will be missing several important players for the Group C match, including captain Jordan Ayew, vice-captains Alexander Djiku and Thomas Partey, as well as forwards Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.

While Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has asked Ghanaian supporters to back the players who are available, Jammeh has pointed to The Gambia’s own injury and absence problems.

According to the assistant coach, The Gambia have also lost several important players and believes their missing players have had a bigger impact on the squad.

Jammeh said five players who have scored a combined 24 goals for the national team in recent months will not be available for the match against Ghana.

“We have missed five players who have scored 24 goals for us over the past few months. Our absentees are more important than the Black Stars players who are missing,” Jammeh said.

Ghana are currently bottom of Group C after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening match. The Gambia, meanwhile, started their campaign with a 2-1 win over Somalia.

The Black Stars now need to get a positive result at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday as they look for their first points of the qualifying campaign.
