We can compete against any team – Panama star Diaz warns Ghana

Panama forward Ismael Diaz has expressed confidence in his country’s ability to compete against any team as they prepare for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Ghana.
Speaking to reporters from Panama’s training camp in New Tecumseth, Ontario, Diaz said his team has developed the mindset and quality needed to challenge some of the world’s best sides.
“We have shown that we can compete against any team,” Diaz said as preparations continued ahead of Wednesday’s Group L match at Toronto Stadium.
The 29-year-old striker is preparing to play in his second FIFA World Cup after previously representing Panama at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Looking back on his career, Diaz spoke about the lessons he has learned from both good and difficult moments and how those experiences have helped him grow as a player.
“Throughout a player’s career, you learn a lot from both positive and negative situations. I’ve learned from everything and now I try to contribute both on and off the field,” he explained.
Panama continued their preparations with a busy training schedule that included tactical video sessions, training drills, and recovery work.
The team remains focused on the challenge of facing Ghana, who are also eager to start their World Cup campaign with a victory.
Despite the importance of the match, Diaz believes Panama are ready.
“We’re not afraid of anyone. We want to compete against whoever is in front of us,” he said.
His comments show the growing belief within the Panama squad that they can challenge more established football nations and possibly make history at the tournament.
A good result against Ghana would give Panama a strong start in Group L as they aim to reach the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
