Ghana Gov’t opens up on Canada visa denial for Thomas Partey

Ghana’s government says it has not received any official information showing that Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey has been denied a visa to enter Canada for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The statement was made by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams after reports suggested that the Villarreal midfielder could face travel problems ahead of Ghana’s Group L match against Panama in Canada on June 17.

Speaking to Joy News, the Minister rejected claims that the government had been informed about any visa refusal involving the former Arsenal player.

“I am not aware that he has been denied a visa. I knew his previous visa to the United States had some challenges, but he has since been issued a visa to be able to enter the United States, and I am unaware that he has been denied a visa to Canada. No, not that I’m aware,” Adams stated.

The Minister also said that if any official decision had been made that could affect Partey’s participation, his office or the Ghana Football Association would likely have been informed.

“I don’t think if any such thing had happened, they would have communicated to me as Minister for Sports and Recreation. I haven’t received any such communication. I’ve been in touch with the FA and the management who are currently in the United States,” he added.

The questions about Partey’s travel status come as Ghana continues preparing for the World Cup, which is being hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Reports about possible visa problems have appeared while the midfielder deals with an ongoing legal case in the United Kingdom.

Partey is facing several criminal charges and is expected to appear for trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. He has denied all the allegations against him.

Earlier this year, his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, repeated her client’s position, stating: “Thomas Partey continues to deny all charges against him. He has cooperated fully with the police throughout. Given that legal proceedings are ongoing, there will be no further comment.”

Despite the reports, there has been no official confirmation from Canadian authorities or FIFA that Partey’s participation in the tournament has been affected.
