Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg has been appointed to officiate Ghana’s opening Group L match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
The match will be played at Toronto Stadium and is expected to be an important game for both teams in a group that also includes England and Croatia.
Nyberg will be assisted by fellow Swedes Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderkvist, who have been named as assistant referees. Khalid Alturais will serve as the fourth official.
The announcement comes as excitement continues to grow ahead of Ghana’s return to the World Cup stage. After successfully qualifying for the tournament, the Black Stars are preparing to compete against some of the best teams in the world.
While much of the focus will be on the players, the appointment of an experienced refereeing team is another important part of the preparations. Nyberg has officiated several major matches in European football and will be responsible for managing what is expected to be a competitive encounter.
For Ghana, the match against Panama offers a chance to make a strong start. A positive result would improve the team’s position in Group L before facing more difficult matches later in the tournament.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to demand focus and discipline from his players as they aim to begin the competition with a victory. Panama will also be eager to earn points and improve their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
With the match officials now confirmed and final preparations continuing, attention is turning to the highly anticipated clash in Toronto, where the Black Stars will hope to start their World Cup campaign on a winning note.
