Man Utd interested after Real Madrid pull out of race to sign expensive midfielder

Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders after two clubs, including Real Madrid, reduced their interest in the £80 million-rated player.

People at Old Trafford want to sign at least two midfielders this summer as they prepare for the departure of Casemiro.

Earlier this month, United agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Serie A club Atalanta. The move is expected to cost an initial £35 million, with an extra £4 million in add-ons.

Alongside Ederson, several midfielders have been linked with a move to Manchester United. These include Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, although he is now believed to be closer to joining Manchester City in what could become a British record transfer.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali have also been linked with the club. However, reports suggest there is growing interest in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

According to The Sun, Manchester United are currently favourites to sign Fernandes. The report claims that Real Madrid, who have also been watching the player, now expect him to join the Premier League club.

Arsenal have also cooled their interest in the Portugal international.

The report adds that West Ham value Fernandes at around £80 million. However, Manchester United hope to negotiate a lower fee after the Hammers were relegated to the Championship.

How good is Mateus Fernandes?

Despite West Ham’s relegation, Fernandes was one of the Premier League’s hardest-working midfielders last season when it came to distance covered on the pitch.

He is also known for his strong defensive work and tough tackling. During the 2025/26 season, he recorded more tackles, interceptions, and duels won than Casemiro.

The 21-year-old mainly plays as a progressive number eight and also completed far more successful dribbles per 90 minutes than the Brazilian midfielder, showing his ability to carry the ball and operate in tight spaces.

His energy, defensive strength, and technical quality have made him one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Europe.
