Coach Richard Afoakwa snubs Hearts of Oak

Accra Lions FC head coach Richard Afoakwa has rejected the chance to join Ghanaian club Hearts of Oak and has decided to stay with the Division One League side after signing a new contract.

‘‘It is for the sake of continuity and believe in the project here at Accra Lions. I have no doubt this is the best place for me to develop and grow’’ Afoakwa exclusively told GHANAsoccernet.com.

Afoakwa was one of the coaches Hearts of Oak were interested in as the club looked to strengthen its coaching and youth development departments before the new season.

The talented coach was offered two roles at the club. He was asked to become Assistant Coach of the senior team and Head Coach of the youth team.

Afoakwa’s decision is a big boost for Accra Lions, who see him as an important part of their future plans.

His decision to stay shows the club’s belief in his ideas and leadership as they prepare for the new season.

Afoakwa joined Accra Lions in August 2025 as assistant coach to James Francis after leaving Division One club Inter Allies FC.

In January 2026, he was promoted to Head Coach after Francis was dismissed.

Afoakwa studied at the University of Cape Coast, where he earned a degree in Psychology and Education.

He has also worked with WAFA and the now-defunct Nsoatreman FC.
