Black Stars aim to extend perfect second-game World Cup record against England

Ghana will go into Tuesday’s important FIFA World Cup match against England with an impressive record.
The Black Stars have never lost their second match at a World Cup. This record has continued through all four of their previous appearances at the tournament.
The run started at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. After losing their opening match to Italy, Ghana bounced back with a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic. Goals from Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari gave Ghana their first-ever World Cup victory and helped them reach the Round of 16.
At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Ghana kept the record going with a 1-1 draw against Australia. Australia were reduced to 10 players after Harry Kewell was sent off for handling the ball on the goal line. Asamoah Gyan scored the penalty to earn Ghana a point.
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Ghana held eventual champions Germany to an exciting 2-2 draw. Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan scored for the Black Stars, who came close to recording a famous victory.
The unbeaten run continued at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when Ghana beat South Korea 3-2. Mohammed Kudus scored twice after Mohammed Salisu had opened the scoring.
Now, after starting their 2026 World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 win over Panama thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi’s late goal, Ghana will try to keep that unbeaten second-match record against England in Boston.
England will provide a difficult challenge after beginning their Group L campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia.
However, history shows that Ghana often perform well in their second World Cup match, and Carlos Queiroz’s team will hope to continue that record as they push for a place in the knockout stage. Continue to More Sports.
