Ghana made history on Wednesday night after defeating Panama 1-0 in Toronto to become the African nation with the most victories at the FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars secured their sixth World Cup win in just 16 matches, moving ahead of Nigeria in terms of winning efficiency on football’s biggest stage. While Nigeria have also recorded six World Cup victories, they reached that total in 21 matches, compared to Ghana’s 16.
The historic achievement came in Ghana’s opening Group L fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic stoppage-time strike secured all three points against Panama.

After a difficult first half, the Black Stars improved significantly following the interval. The introduction of Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Brandon Thomas-Asante added pace and creativity to Ghana’s attack, helping Carlos Queiroz’s side gain a stronger foothold in the game.
Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when Thomas-Asante launched a rapid counterattack before setting up Yirenkyi, who calmly finished to hand Ghana a memorable victory.
The result not only boosted Ghana’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage but also saw the four-time African champions climb to the top of Africa’s all-time World Cup wins ranking.
Most FIFA World Cup wins by African nations
1. Ghana – 6 wins (16 matches)
2. Nigeria – 6 wins (21 matches)
3. Cameroon – 5 wins (26 matches)
4. Morocco – 5 wins (23 matches)
5. Senegal – 5 wins (11 matches)
Since making their World Cup debut in 2006, Ghana have established themselves as one of Africa’s most consistent performers at the tournament.
The Black Stars reached the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany before producing their best-ever performance in South Africa in 2010, where they advanced to the quarter-finals and came within a penalty shootout of becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
Their latest triumph over Panama adds another milestone to Ghana’s proud World Cup history and further strengthens their status among Africa’s elite football nations.
With crucial Group L encounters against England and Croatia still to come, the Black Stars will hope their historic victory serves as the platform for another memorable run on the global stage. Continue to More Sports.
