Ghana vs Panama: They kept the ball well, and we soaked up the pressure – Jordan Ayew

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has praised Ghana’s patience and strong second-half performance after the team’s dramatic 1-0 win over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Ghanafa.org, Ayew admitted that Ghana struggled in the first half but said the players stayed calm despite Panama’s strong start.
“The first half didn’t go as planned, but we were patient,” Ayew said.
“They kept the ball well, and we soaked up the pressure. In the second half, a lot changed. We grew in confidence and kept possession much better.”
Ghana scored the winning goal deep into stoppage time when Caleb Yirenkyi finished a cross from Brandon Thomas-Asante to earn all three points in Toronto.
Ayew said the team deserved praise for staying united and reacting well after a difficult first half.
“We looked more composed and direct after the break. We believed in ourselves and kept working until the end.”
The victory means Ghana and England both have three points at the top of Group L ahead of their meeting in Boston on Tuesday. Continue to More Sports.
