2026 World Cup: Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare sets record

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made history for Ghana after becoming the first home-based goalkeeper to play in a World Cup match for the Black Stars.

For many years, Ghana’s World Cup goalkeepers have all played their club football outside the country.

Goalkeepers such as Richard Kingson, Fatau Dauda, Adam Larsen Kwarasey and Lawrence Ati-Zigi all represented Ghana at the World Cup while playing abroad.

Meanwhile, local goalkeepers including George Owu, Stephen Ahorlu, Daniel Adjei and Stephen Adams never got the chance to play in a World Cup match.

That changed at BMO Field in Toronto.

When first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi suffered an injury late in the first half, Asare was called to warm up on the touchline.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz then brought him on at the start of the second half, making him Ghana’s first substitute of the game.

The 33-year-old Hearts of Oak goalkeeper stepped onto the pitch and became the first home-based goalkeeper to feature for Ghana at a World Cup.

Asare looked calm and confident after coming on, helping to organise the defence and bringing stability to the team when it was needed most.

His appearance was more than just a substitution. It was an important moment for Ghana football and a proud achievement for players competing in the Ghana Premier League.

Asare’s journey has taken him from Sporting Mirren to Great Olympics and later to Hearts of Oak, where he established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the country.

His World Cup appearance was the reward for years of hard work, patience and consistency, proving that local players can still reach the highest level of football. Continue to More Sports.
