Tunisia vs Japan will set record in FIFA World Cup history

Tunisia will play Japan in Group F on Friday at Monterrey Stadium. This match will be the 1,000th game in World Cup history.

This special moment comes during the 2026 World Cup, which is bigger than before. It has 48 teams and 104 matches and is being hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will be in charge of the match. He will be helped by Ferencz Tunyogi and Mihai Marica. Juan Calderón and Juan Carlos Mora from Costa Rica will be the fourth official and reserve assistant referee.

To celebrate this big milestone, all referees will wear special adidas kits with gold stripes on the sleeves and a “Match 1000” badge.

FIFA referee boss Pierluigi Collina said Kovacs was chosen because of his quality, and the milestone makes the match even more special.

This game also reminds people of Tunisia and Japan meeting in the 2002 World Cup group stage.

The 1,000th match shows how much the World Cup has grown since 1930, when there were only 13 teams and 18 matches. The 2026 tournament is the biggest ever, with 48 teams playing across 16 host cities. Continue to More Sports.
