I’ve nothing against you but I will still choose Benjamin Asare – Christopher Nimley replies Ati-Zigi

Football scout and coach Christopher Nimley has responded to recent comments made by Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi about their relationship, insisting that he has never criticised the Ghana international out of personal dislike. Instead, Nimley says every opinion he has shared about the goalkeeper has been based on football and his desire to see Ati-Zigi become an even better player.

The discussion has attracted plenty of attention because the two men have known each other for many years. Nimley played an important role during Ati-Zigi’s early football development, making their disagreement surprising to many Ghanaian football fans. Although their relationship appears to have become strained over time, Nimley says he still wants the goalkeeper to succeed and believes they can eventually repair their friendship.

Speaking during an interview on Sporty FM, the experienced coach addressed the issue directly and rejected claims that he has been running a personal campaign against the St. Gallen goalkeeper.

Nimley Says He Wants Ati-Zigi to Succeed

Nimley explained that he has always wished the very best for Lawrence Ati-Zigi and believes few people want to see the goalkeeper succeed as much as he does.

According to the coach, his relationship with Ati-Zigi goes back many years, and he has watched the goalkeeper grow from a young player into a regular member of the Black Stars. Because of that history, Nimley says it would make no sense for him to work against someone whose development he helped support.

“He talked about my criticism of him being personal. If there’s anybody out there that seeks his success apart from his immediate family, nobody desires his success more than I do,” Nimley said.

His comments suggest that he still cares deeply about Ati-Zigi’s career despite the disagreements that have emerged in recent years. Nimley believes his observations should be viewed as honest football analysis rather than personal attacks.

Criticism Based on Football, Not Personal Feelings

The football scout also explained that whenever he comments on Ati-Zigi’s performances, he focuses only on technical and tactical aspects of goalkeeping.

In modern football, players are constantly analysed by coaches, former professionals, journalists, and supporters. Mistakes and strong performances are often discussed publicly, especially when players represent their national teams.

Nimley believes his own analysis falls into that category. He says his intention has always been to point out areas where Ati-Zigi can improve rather than damage the goalkeeper’s reputation.

“I will always critique him in a manner that will make sure it brings the best out of him. It has nothing to do with any personal interest; it was strictly tactical,” he added.

For Nimley, honest criticism is an important part of football. Coaches regularly identify weaknesses because they want players to improve, and he believes his comments should be understood in that context.

An Olive Branch to His Former Player

Despite the disagreement between the two men, Nimley made it clear that he has no interest in continuing any personal conflict.

Instead, he extended what many would see as an olive branch by saying Ati-Zigi would always be welcome to reconnect with him. The coach expressed confidence that, with time, their relationship could improve.

Years of working together often create strong bonds between coaches and players. Although disagreements sometimes develop later in their careers, many of those relationships are eventually repaired through open communication and mutual respect.

Nimley hopes the same thing will happen with Ati-Zigi.

“If he thinks we have issues, he is always welcome to come home and I know that one day he will come home. The day he steps up and he is better than Benjamin Asare, I’ll say it. But I maintain that if I’m to choose between him and Asare, I’ll choose Asare,” he said.

His comments show that while he remains firm in his football opinions, he does not believe those opinions should prevent the two from having a good personal relationship.

Benjamin Asare Still His Number One Choice

Although Nimley expressed hope of reconciling with Ati-Zigi, he also stood by his football assessment regarding Ghana’s goalkeeping position.

The experienced coach said that if he had to choose between Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Hearts of Oak captain Benjamin Asare, he would still select Asare.

Benjamin Asare has enjoyed an outstanding period for both club and country. His impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup helped raise his reputation, with the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper producing several important displays for the Black Stars during the tournament.

Asare’s calm presence, leadership, and consistency have earned praise from many football observers. His performances have even attracted reported transfer interest from clubs outside Ghana following the World Cup.

Nimley’s preference for Asare therefore reflects his football opinion based on recent performances rather than any personal disagreement with Ati-Zigi.

At the same time, he made it clear that if Ati-Zigi eventually performs at a higher level than Asare, he would have no problem acknowledging that publicly.

Ati-Zigi Recently Opened Up

Nimley’s comments come shortly after Lawrence Ati-Zigi spoke openly about the breakdown in their relationship.

The Black Stars goalkeeper explained that Nimley had been an important figure during his early football career and helped him develop as a young player. Because of that shared history, Ati-Zigi admitted it was painful to see their relationship change over the years.

According to the goalkeeper, he believes the criticism he has received from his former coach has gone beyond normal football analysis and become personal.

Those comments sparked fresh discussion among football supporters, many of whom were surprised to learn that the relationship between the two men had deteriorated after such a positive beginning.

Nimley’s latest interview now provides his side of the story, giving supporters a better understanding of how he views the situation.

Honest Analysis Can Sometimes Create Tension

Disagreements between players and former coaches are not uncommon in football.

Former coaches often become television pundits, radio analysts, or football experts after leaving the touchline. Their role usually involves giving honest opinions about performances, tactics, and player decisions.

Sometimes those opinions are welcomed by players because they provide useful feedback. At other times, players may feel the criticism becomes too harsh or unfair, especially when it is repeated over a long period.

This appears to be the situation involving Nimley and Ati-Zigi.

While Ati-Zigi believes the criticism has become personal, Nimley insists it has always been based purely on football and his desire to help the goalkeeper improve.

The difference in how each man views the situation has created the misunderstanding that now exists between them.

Respect Remains Despite Different Opinions

Although both men have shared different views publicly, there are still signs of mutual respect.

Ati-Zigi has acknowledged the important role Nimley played during the early years of his football career, while Nimley continues to describe himself as someone who genuinely wants the goalkeeper to succeed.

That mutual recognition may provide a foundation for repairing their relationship in the future.

Football careers often involve emotional moments, especially when players and coaches have worked closely together over many years. Strong opinions, public criticism, and competitive pressure can sometimes create misunderstandings that take time to resolve.

Nimley believes that with patience and honest conversation, those differences can eventually be overcome.

Focus Remains on the Black Stars

As Ghana prepares for future international competitions, both Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Benjamin Asare are expected to remain important goalkeeping options for the Black Stars.

Competition for the number one position can only benefit the national team, as each goalkeeper will be motivated to improve and deliver strong performances whenever given the opportunity.

Nimley’s comments also highlight how passionate many former coaches remain about Ghanaian football. Even when opinions differ, the common goal is to see the Black Stars become stronger and more successful on the international stage.

For now, the disagreement between Christopher Nimley and Lawrence Ati-Zigi continues to attract attention. However, the coach has made one thing clear. He believes his criticism has always been about football, never about personal feelings, and he hopes that one day both men will put their differences behind them and rebuild the relationship they once shared.
