For now, Benjamin Asare is still ahead of you – Coach Nimley respond to Ati-Zigi

Football scout and coach Christopher Nimley has responded to recent comments made by Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, insisting that his criticism of the Ghana international has never been driven by personal feelings. Nimley says he has always wanted the goalkeeper to succeed and believes that, despite their current differences, the two can eventually rebuild the strong relationship they once shared.
The issue has become a major talking point in Ghanaian football after Ati-Zigi recently revealed that his relationship with his former youth coach had broken down over the years. The goalkeeper suggested that the criticism he has received from Nimley had become personal, but the experienced coach has now firmly rejected those claims.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Nimley explained that every opinion he has expressed about Ati-Zigi has been based on football and nothing else. According to him, his goal has always been to help the goalkeeper improve rather than attack him personally.

Nimley Says He Wants the Goalkeeper to Succeed
Nimley made it clear that he still has great affection for Ati-Zigi and wants to see him achieve even greater success in his career. He believes very few people outside the goalkeeper’s own family want him to do well as much as he does.
The football scout reminded listeners that he has known Ati-Zigi for many years and has followed his development from a young player to becoming Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper. Because of that history, he believes it would make no sense for him to work against someone whose progress he has supported since the beginning.
“He talked about my criticism of him being personal. If there’s anybody out there that seeks his success apart from his immediate family, nobody desires his success more than I do,” Nimley said.
His comments suggest that, despite the public disagreement, he still views Ati-Zigi as someone whose career he genuinely cares about. Rather than seeing himself as a critic, Nimley believes he is simply offering honest football analysis that can help the goalkeeper improve.
Criticism Was Based on Tactics
Nimley also explained that every comment he has made about Ati-Zigi has been based on technical and tactical observations rather than emotion.
Football analysts regularly study players’ performances and point out strengths and weaknesses after matches. According to Nimley, that is exactly what he has been doing whenever he discusses Ati-Zigi’s displays for club and country.
He believes constructive criticism is an important part of football because it helps players continue learning and developing throughout their careers. In his view, remaining silent about mistakes would not benefit any player.
“I will always critique him in a manner that will make sure it brings the best out of him. It has nothing to do with any personal interest; it was strictly tactical,” he added.
The former youth coach stressed that his comments have always been aimed at encouraging improvement rather than creating controversy. He insists there has never been any hidden agenda behind his public opinions.
Hoping to Repair Their Relationship
Although Nimley disagrees with Ati-Zigi’s view of the situation, he says he has no interest in allowing the disagreement to continue forever.
Instead, the coach extended what many would describe as an olive branch to the Black Stars goalkeeper, expressing confidence that they will eventually mend their relationship.
Relationships between coaches and former players can sometimes become strained, especially when public criticism is involved. However, Nimley believes time and understanding can help both men move past their differences.
He said Ati-Zigi would always be welcome to reconnect with him if he felt there were problems between them. The coach remains hopeful that one day they will once again enjoy the close relationship they shared during the goalkeeper’s younger years.
Benjamin Asare Still His First Choice
While expressing his support for Ati-Zigi, Nimley also stood by his football opinion regarding Ghana’s goalkeeping position.
The experienced coach admitted that he still prefers Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare whenever the discussion turns to Ghana’s number one goalkeeper.
“If he thinks we have issues, he is always welcome to come home and I know that one day he will come home. The day he steps up and he is better than Benjamin Asare, I’ll say it. But I maintain that if I’m to choose between him and Asare, I’ll choose Asare,” he said.
His comments show that although he hopes to repair his relationship with Ati-Zigi, he is not prepared to change his football opinion simply to avoid criticism.
Nimley believes Benjamin Asare has earned his support through his recent performances. However, he also made it clear that if Ati-Zigi reaches a higher level than Asare in the future, he would openly acknowledge that.
Benjamin Asare’s Recent Rise
Benjamin Asare has enjoyed an impressive rise over the past year, establishing himself as one of Ghana’s top goalkeepers.
The Hearts of Oak captain strengthened his reputation with several outstanding performances during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His displays helped Ghana reach the knockout stage and earned praise from football fans both at home and abroad.
Asare’s confidence, leadership, and consistency have also attracted reported interest from clubs outside Ghana. Those performances are likely to be one of the main reasons Nimley currently rates him ahead of Ati-Zigi.
Even so, healthy competition between two experienced goalkeepers can only benefit the Black Stars as they prepare for future international competitions.
Ati-Zigi Recently Shared His Side
Nimley’s response comes only a few days after Lawrence Ati-Zigi publicly discussed the breakdown in their relationship.
The St. Gallen goalkeeper acknowledged that Nimley had played an important role in his football development during his younger years. He credited the coach with helping him improve and guiding him through an important stage of his career.
However, Ati-Zigi also revealed that the close relationship they once enjoyed had gradually deteriorated. According to the Black Stars goalkeeper, he feels that Nimley’s football analysis has turned into a personal campaign against him.
Those comments sparked widespread discussion among Ghanaian football supporters, many of whom were surprised to hear about the disagreement between two people who had once worked so closely together.
Nimley’s latest interview now offers his own explanation of the situation and explains why he believes his criticism has been misunderstood.
Different Views on Football Analysis
The disagreement between Nimley and Ati-Zigi highlights how football analysis can sometimes create tension between former coaches and players.
Many retired coaches continue working in football as television pundits, radio analysts, or scouts. Their job often involves giving honest opinions about player performances, tactics, and team selections.
While some players appreciate that feedback, others may feel repeated criticism becomes unfair or overly personal.
In this case, Nimley insists his comments have always focused on football matters, while Ati-Zigi believes they have crossed into personal territory.
The difference in those two viewpoints appears to be the main reason their relationship has become strained.
Respect Still Exists
Despite the public disagreement, there are still signs that respect remains between the two men.
Ati-Zigi has openly recognised the role Nimley played in helping him during the early years of his career. Likewise, Nimley continues to describe himself as one of the goalkeeper’s biggest supporters and says he genuinely wants to see him succeed.
That mutual respect could eventually help both men repair their relationship.
Disagreements are not unusual in football, especially between coaches and players who have shared many years together. Strong opinions and public scrutiny can sometimes create misunderstandings that take time to resolve.
For now, Christopher Nimley has made his position clear. He believes his criticism of Lawrence Ati-Zigi has always been about improving the goalkeeper’s performances rather than attacking him personally. At the same time, he remains hopeful that one day they will put their differences behind them and restore the relationship that once helped shape one of Ghana’s leading goalkeepers.
