World Cup 2026: Caleb Yirenkyi sets record after late winner
Caleb Yirenkyi wrote his name into Ghana football history on Wednesday night after scoring a dramatic late winner against Panama to become the 10th different player to score for the Black Stars at a FIFA World Cup.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who was making his World Cup debut, scored in the 92nd minute to give Ghana a 1-0 victory in their Group L opener at BMO Field in Toronto. His goal earned the Black Stars three important points and added a new chapter to Ghana’s World Cup history.
Ghana’s World Cup Goalscorers
Before Yirenkyi’s goal, nine players had scored Ghana’s 18 World Cup goals across four tournaments between 2006 and 2022.
Asamoah Gyan leads the list with six goals, making him Africa’s highest-scoring player in World Cup history. Andre Ayew is next with three goals, while Sulley Muntari and Mohammed Kudus have scored two each.
The other goals were scored by Stephen Appiah, Haminu Draman, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Mohammed Salisu and Osman Bukari.
Yirenkyi’s strike was Ghana’s 19th World Cup goal and increased the number of Black Stars players to score at the tournament to 10.
The goal also made him the youngest Ghanaian to score at a World Cup, at 20 years and 153 days old.
For the young midfielder, it was a dream moment. For Ghana, it was another piece of World Cup history created in Toronto.
