I am still an idiot – Klopp apologises to Nagelsmann over harsh comment

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has apologised to Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann over a comment he made before the country’s FIFA World Cup campaign.

Klopp used the word “still” when talking about Nagelsmann’s role as Germany coach, which suggested there could be uncertainty about his future.

Speaking as a pundit on Magenta TV alongside former Germany international Thomas Muller, Klopp discussed Germany’s squad selection and said:

“Fortunately, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team.”

After Germany’s 7-1 win over World Cup debutants Curacao on Sunday, June 14, Klopp apologised for the remark.

He said:

“I have already identified the most despised word of the year: ‘Still’. I could have slapped myself for that, but it was too late as I was live on TV. It just came out so effortlessly, and it holds no significance.

“What I have come to understand is that I will be 59 on Tuesday, and I am still an idiot,” he added.

The 58-year-old also made it clear that he fully supports Nagelsmann.

“We are entirely behind you, regardless of what you decide with this. Nothing will arise that is meant to disrupt the process here.”

Klopp has not managed a football team since stepping down as Liverpool manager in 2024.

The German coach later became Head of Global Football at Red Bull, although there has been speculation linking him with the Germany job in the future.

Despite those rumours, Klopp stressed his support for Nagelsmann and said his earlier comment was not meant to create any doubts about the Germany coach’s position.
