FIFA bans country from all football activities

FIFA has imposed an indefinite suspension on Nepal from all football-related activities after determining that the country’s football association had committed serious violations of FIFA regulations involving third-party interference.
The decision means Nepal will no longer be allowed to participate in international football competitions at any level until the suspension is lifted. The punishment affects both the national teams and club sides, while also preventing the country’s football authorities from accessing FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) development programs and financial support.
The suspension represents a major setback for football in the South Asian nation and highlights FIFA’s continued determination to protect the independence of football associations around the world.
FIFA Announces Immediate Suspension
The governing body of world football confirmed the decision through an official statement released on June 24, 2026.
According to FIFA, the suspension was imposed because of what it described as “flagrant violations” of its statutes related to interference from outside parties in the affairs of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA).
The issue stems from actions taken by Nepal’s National Sports Council, which had previously issued a three-month suspension against ANFA before later withdrawing the decision.
Despite the suspension being rescinded, FIFA and the AFC had already expressed concerns about external involvement in the management and operation of Nepal’s football federation.
After reviewing the situation, FIFA concluded that the actions amounted to a breach of its rules regarding the independence of national football associations.
In its statement, FIFA explained:
“The Bureau of the Council also decided to suspend the All Nepal Football Association with immediate effect due to flagrant violations of the FIFA Statutes linked to interference by a third party.”
The decision came into effect immediately, leaving Nepal isolated from international football until further notice.
What the Suspension Means for Nepal
The consequences of the suspension are significant and far-reaching.
As a result of the ban, ANFA has lost all membership rights associated with FIFA membership. This means Nepal can no longer participate in official international football competitions organized by FIFA or the AFC.
The suspension applies to every level of football within the country.
Nepal’s men’s national team, women’s national team, youth teams, and club teams are all prohibited from competing internationally while the suspension remains in place.
FIFA further stated:
“Consequently, with effect from 24 June 2026, ANFA has lost all of its membership rights, as defined in article 13 of the FIFA Statutes, until further notice.”
The governing body also instructed football organizations around the world not to engage in sporting activities with Nepal during the suspension period.
That means international friendly matches, tournaments, and other football-related collaborations involving Nepal are effectively prohibited.
Loss of FIFA and AFC Funding
Beyond the sporting consequences, the suspension also carries significant financial implications.
FIFA confirmed that neither ANFA nor any of its officials will be eligible to receive support from FIFA or the AFC while the ban remains in force.
This includes development grants, infrastructure programs, coaching courses, training opportunities, and various football development initiatives that FIFA regularly provides to its member associations.
The organization stated:
“This also means that neither ANFA nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any development programmes, courses or training from FIFA and/or the AFC.”
For a developing football nation such as Nepal, the loss of funding and educational support could have a major impact on the growth of the sport at both grassroots and professional levels.
Football development projects, coaching education programs, youth academies, and infrastructure improvements could all be affected by the suspension.
Why FIFA Takes Third-Party Interference Seriously
One of FIFA’s fundamental principles is that football associations must operate independently without interference from governments, political bodies, or external organizations.
The governing body believes football federations should manage their own affairs and make decisions without pressure or influence from outside entities.
This principle is enshrined in FIFA’s statutes and is considered essential to preserving the integrity and autonomy of football governance.
Whenever FIFA determines that a national association has been subjected to inappropriate external influence, it can impose sanctions ranging from warnings to full suspension.
The organization has consistently applied this policy across different regions of the world, regardless of the size or status of the affected nation.
In Nepal’s case, FIFA determined that the involvement of the National Sports Council crossed the line into unacceptable interference.
As a result, disciplinary action became unavoidable under FIFA regulations.
Nepal’s Football History
Although Nepal is not considered one of Asia’s football powerhouses, the country has continued to develop its football program over the years.
The national team is currently ranked 117th in the FIFA World Rankings, placing it ahead of several nations including Pakistan, Barbados, Gibraltar, and San Marino.
Nepal has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup or AFC Asian Cup, but the country has experienced moments of success on the regional stage.
One of the biggest achievements in Nepalese football history came in 2016 when the national team won the AFC Solidarity Cup.
The victory provided one of the proudest moments in the country’s football journey and demonstrated the potential of the sport within the nation.
Nepal’s highest FIFA ranking came during the early 1990s, while its lowest ranking was recorded in January 2016 when the team fell to 196th in the world.
In recent years, the country has worked steadily to improve its standing through investment in player development and competitive participation.
The suspension now threatens to disrupt that progress.
Recent International Results
Before the suspension was announced, Nepal had continued competing in international football competitions.
The national team’s most recent match came in March 2026 during AFC Asian Cup qualification, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Laos.
The team had been preparing for future qualification fixtures and regional competitions.
However, those plans have now been placed on hold indefinitely.
Until FIFA removes the suspension, Nepal will not be allowed to participate in any international football activity.
Players who were hoping to represent their country in upcoming competitions now face an uncertain future.
Similarly, domestic clubs hoping to compete in AFC tournaments will also be unable to do so while the ban remains active.
Similar Cases Around the World
Nepal is far from the first nation to face FIFA sanctions over governance issues.
Over the years, FIFA has suspended numerous countries after determining that political or governmental interference had affected the independence of football administration.
Countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia, the Republic of Congo, and Nigeria have all faced similar punishments in recent years.
In many cases, the suspensions were eventually lifted after the affected associations met FIFA’s requirements and restored compliance with the governing body’s regulations.
Pakistan and the Republic of Congo were both suspended as recently as last year due to governance-related concerns.
After implementing reforms and satisfying FIFA’s demands, both countries were able to regain their membership rights and return to international football.
This provides some hope for Nepal.
Although the suspension is indefinite, it is not necessarily permanent.
If ANFA and the relevant authorities can resolve the governance issues identified by FIFA, the ban could eventually be lifted.
Only Russia Shares Similar Status
At present, Nepal joins a very short list of countries unable to participate in international football.
The only other nation currently suspended from global football competition is Russia, which remains banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The circumstances surrounding the two suspensions are very different.
Russia’s exclusion relates to geopolitical events, while Nepal’s punishment stems from governance and administrative issues.
Nevertheless, both countries currently find themselves outside the international football community.
For Nepal, the path back appears clearer.
Unlike geopolitical sanctions, governance-related suspensions can often be resolved through reforms and compliance with FIFA’s regulations.
What Happens Next?
FIFA has made it clear that the suspension can be lifted if the conditions that led to the punishment are addressed.
The governing body stated that the Bureau of the FIFA Council or the FIFA Council itself has the authority to remove the suspension before the next FIFA Congress if the necessary requirements are met.
This means discussions between FIFA, the AFC, ANFA, and Nepalese authorities are likely to continue in the coming weeks and months.
The focus will be on ensuring that Nepal’s football federation can operate independently and in accordance with FIFA statutes.
Until that happens, Nepal’s football community faces a difficult period of uncertainty.
Players, coaches, officials, clubs, and supporters will all be hoping that a solution can be found quickly so that the country can return to international competition and continue its football development journey.
For now, however, Nepal’s place in world football has been put on hold as FIFA enforces one of its strictest disciplinary measures in response to governance concerns.
