He told me some bad words – Carlos Queiroz on Jude Bellingham’s touchline confrontation

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has alleged that England midfielder Jude Bellingham used offensive language towards him during a tense confrontation at half-time in the FIFA World Cup Group L clash between Ghana and England.

The incident added another layer of drama to what was already an intense and highly competitive encounter between the two nations at Boston’s Gillette Stadium. Although the match eventually ended in a goalless draw, the confrontation involving Bellingham and members of Ghana’s technical team quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the evening.

The result left both teams with four points after two group matches and ensured that qualification for the Round of 32 would be decided in the final round of fixtures. However, much of the post-match conversation focused not on the football itself but on the heated exchange that took place just before the players headed into the dressing rooms.

Tension Builds Before Half-Time

The flashpoint occurred shortly before the referee blew for the end of the first half.

England and Ghana were locked in a fiercely contested battle, with both sides competing aggressively for every ball. Neither team wanted to give away an advantage, and the intensity of the contest had been building throughout the opening 45 minutes.

The situation escalated when Bellingham challenged Ghana defender Jerome Opoku near the touchline. The England star attempted to win possession but appeared to arrive late, making significant contact with the Ghanaian defender.

Opoku was left on the ground following the challenge, prompting immediate concern from Ghana’s coaching staff and players on the bench.

Members of the Black Stars technical team quickly reacted to the tackle, believing it deserved stronger punishment from the referee. Their protests increased as Opoku remained down receiving treatment.

Television cameras then captured Bellingham exchanging words with individuals from the Ghana bench as emotions began to rise on both sides.

As players prepared to leave the field for the interval, the situation threatened to become more heated before England forward Morgan Rogers stepped in and guided his teammate away from the confrontation.

Queiroz Explains What Happened

Speaking after the match, Queiroz provided his version of events and explained why he became involved in the incident. According to the experienced Portuguese coach, his initial intention was not to argue with Bellingham but simply to ensure that Opoku was okay following the challenge.

Queiroz said he was concerned about the welfare of his player and wanted the England midfielder to remain calm after what he viewed as a dangerous tackle.

“My intention was to tell him to cool down with that tackle that he did,” Queiroz explained.

The Ghana coach continued by stressing that his focus was primarily on Opoku’s condition rather than creating a confrontation.

“I was worried because our player was still down and I wanted to make sure everything was okay.”

Queiroz suggested that the conversation could have ended there, but he claimed matters escalated when Bellingham responded angrily.

Allegation of Offensive Language

The former Portugal, Iran and Real Madrid manager alleged that Bellingham reacted with offensive language during the exchange.

According to Queiroz, the England midfielder’s response intensified the situation and created further tension between the two camps.

“He had a bad reaction with some bad names and that’s why the story started,” Queiroz said.

While the Ghana coach did not reveal the exact words that were allegedly used, he made it clear that he felt Bellingham’s reaction contributed significantly to the confrontation.

His comments quickly became a major talking point after the match, especially given Bellingham’s high profile as one of England’s most important players. The midfielder has been one of the standout performers for England in recent years and is widely regarded as one of the best young footballers in the world.

As a result, Queiroz’s claims immediately attracted widespread attention from supporters and media covering the tournament.

Queiroz Questions the Tackle

Beyond the verbal exchange, Queiroz also expressed concerns about the challenge itself. The Ghana coach argued that Bellingham was fortunate not to receive more severe punishment from the match officials.

He suggested that the tackle could easily have resulted in a second yellow card or even a straight red card depending on how the referee interpreted the incident.

“It could be a second yellow card or even a red card, It was clear because he went with his foot against our player,” Queiroz said.

Although the referee chose not to take further action, Queiroz’s comments highlighted the frustration felt by the Ghana bench during the match. The Black Stars coaching staff believed several decisions throughout the game went against them, including a second-half penalty appeal that was rejected despite strong protests.

The challenge involving Bellingham only added to those frustrations.

Bellingham Gives His Side of the Story

Following the match, Bellingham also addressed the incident and admitted that his challenge had been poorly timed.

The England midfielder acknowledged that he had made a mistake while attempting to win possession and accepted responsibility for the tackle.

“It was just when I made a silly tackle, to be honest, “I was trying to win the ball and I followed through a little bit and caught the lad,” Bellingham said.

The midfielder explained that he had already spoken with Opoku after the challenge and attempted to clear the air. He also suggested that members of the Ghana bench were trying to influence the referee into showing him a card.

“I spoke to him after and then their bench jumped up trying to get me a yellow card,” he added.

Bellingham’s version of events differed significantly from Queiroz’s account, but both agreed that emotions were running high during the closing moments of the first half.

A Match Full of Emotion and Intensity

While the confrontation grabbed headlines, it was perhaps not surprising considering the importance of the occasion.

Both Ghana and England entered the match knowing that victory would place them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.

England arrived full of confidence after their impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening game.

Meanwhile, Ghana were buoyed by their dramatic 1-0 win against Panama, secured by Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time goal.
