Our plan was to let Panama take control until we score – Carlos Queiroz

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has explained the strategy that helped the Black Stars secure a vital 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
The Black Stars spent large parts of the game under pressure but showed determination and patience before finding the winning goal through Caleb Yirenkyi deep into stoppage time.
Substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante started the decisive move with a quick counter-attack before delivering a perfectly timed pass into the penalty area. Yirenkyi arrived at the right moment and calmly finished to spark celebrations among Ghanaian supporters.
Speaking after the match, Queiroz said the victory came from a carefully planned approach that his team followed throughout the game.
“Step by step was our strategy. To let them [Panama] come and start to control, control, control, until we score. Because this is the way to win. Win all the time,” he said.
The victory gives Ghana a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and leaves them in a strong position in Group L after England’s 4-2 win over Croatia.
The result also gives the Black Stars confidence ahead of their next match against England, as Queiroz and his players look to build on their winning start and move closer to a place in the knockout stage. Continue to More Sports.
