There is concern over the fitness of Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi after Ghana’s hard-fought victory over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana secured a dramatic win in their Group L opener on Wednesday night, but attention has now turned to Ati-Zigi after he was forced off at halftime.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz selected Ati-Zigi as Ghana’s starting goalkeeper ahead of Benjamin Asare for the opening match.
The St. Gallen goalkeeper made several excellent saves in the first half, helping the Black Stars deal with Panama’s strong start and keeping the score level during a tense opening period.
However, Ati-Zigi suffered an injury near the end of the first half and was unable to continue after the break.
There has been no official update on the extent of the injury, but early reports suggest that the situation will be assessed within the next 12 hours to determine how serious it is and whether he will be available for Ghana’s next match.
Following his withdrawal, Benjamin Asare came on for the second half and delivered a calm performance in goal.
A late strike from Caleb Yirenkyi eventually gave the Black Stars a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama.
Ghana will now wait for further medical updates on Ati-Zigi as preparations begin for their next World Cup fixture. Continue to More Sports.
