Morocco will no longer bid to host African football competitions, according to Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa.
The North African country is now focusing all its efforts on major global tournaments, including the 2029 Club World Cup and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Portugal and Spain.
Lekjaa’s announcement signals a major change in Morocco’s football plans. The country has regularly hosted CAF tournaments and has been one of Africa’s most active hosts in recent years.
Morocco also hosted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and several CAF Champions League finals. However, the country now appears ready to focus on bigger international competitions on the world stage.
The decision could have a big impact on CAF, which has often depended on Morocco to host continental tournaments. With Morocco stepping away from future bids, other African countries may now need to take on that responsibility.
For now, Morocco’s attention is firmly on the 2029 Club World Cup and its historic role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
African competitions will no longer be the country’s main priority.
