Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has called on Ghanaians to continue believing in the national team despite Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia, insisting that the disappointing result has not affected the players’ confidence or determination ahead of the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced forward acknowledged that Ghana fell short of their usual standards during the final Group L encounter but stressed that the defeat should be viewed as a valuable lesson rather than a major setback. According to Ayew, the mood within the Black Stars camp remains positive, with the players already turning their full attention to the Round of 32, where they hope to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
Although the defeat denied Ghana the chance to finish top of Group L, the Black Stars had already secured qualification before kick-off after accumulating four points from their opening two matches. Their victory over Panama and hard-fought draw against England, combined with results elsewhere in the tournament, guaranteed progression under FIFA’s expanded 48-team World Cup format.

Qualification Already Secured Before Croatia Clash
Unlike many teams entering the final round of group matches under pressure to qualify, Ghana stepped onto the pitch against Croatia already knowing they had booked their place in the knockout rounds.
The Black Stars opened their campaign with a narrow but important 1-0 victory over Panama, collecting three valuable points that immediately strengthened their qualification hopes.
They then produced one of the defensive performances of the tournament by frustrating England in a goalless draw. Despite England dominating possession throughout the contest, Ghana remained organised, disciplined and resilient to secure another important point.
Those two results proved enough to guarantee progression after other matches across the tournament confirmed that four points would secure qualification to the Round of 32.
However, despite already advancing, Ghana still entered the Croatia match determined to finish the group stage on a high.
Victory would have given Carlos Queiroz’s side an excellent opportunity to finish top of Group L while maintaining their unbeaten record.
Instead, Croatia claimed a 2-1 victory after capitalising on Ghana’s mistakes.
Ayew Admits Ghana Were Below Their Best
Speaking after the match, Jordan Ayew admitted the Black Stars did not perform at the level they expected from themselves.
The captain felt Ghana lacked their usual sharpness throughout parts of the contest, allowing Croatia to take advantage of costly errors.
“We stay positive and on to the next game. Today was a weird game. We were a bit sloppy and they (Croatia) capitalized on our mistakes.”
The honest assessment reflected Ayew’s leadership qualities. Rather than making excuses, the veteran forward accepted that Ghana simply made too many mistakes against an experienced Croatian side capable of punishing any lapse in concentration.
Croatia took the lead through Petar Sucic before Ghana responded in the second half when Derrick Luckassen scored on his World Cup debut.
However, Nikola Vlasic restored Croatia’s advantage shortly afterwards, ensuring the European side claimed all three points.
One Defeat Does Not Change Ghana’s Progress
While naturally disappointed by the result, Ayew made it clear that one defeat should not overshadow everything Ghana have accomplished during the tournament so far.
The Black Stars entered the World Cup surrounded by uncertainty following injuries to several key players and the appointment of Carlos Queiroz only a few months before the competition.
Many observers questioned whether the team could quickly adapt to the Portuguese coach’s tactical approach.
Instead, Ghana responded impressively. The Black Stars kept clean sheets in their opening two matches, defeated Panama, frustrated England and secured qualification for the knockout stage for the first time since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Ayew believes those achievements demonstrate how much progress the squad has made over a short period.
He insists the Croatia defeat should be viewed as a temporary setback rather than evidence that the team’s development has stalled.
Learning Important Lessons Before the Knockout Stage
One of the key messages from Ayew after the match was the importance of learning from mistakes. According to the Ghana captain, every match at a World Cup provides valuable experience, particularly for younger players experiencing the tournament for the first time.
The defeat exposed areas where Ghana can improve before entering the knockout rounds. The Black Stars struggled to create enough attacking opportunities during the first half and were occasionally guilty of losing concentration during important defensive moments.
After falling behind, Ghana produced a much-improved second-half performance and showed the resilience that has become one of the team’s defining characteristics throughout the tournament.
Ayew believes correcting those small mistakes could make a significant difference in future matches.
Confidence Remains Strong Inside the Camp
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Ayew’s comments was his insistence that the defeat has not damaged the team’s confidence.
The Black Stars captain said the players remain united and continue to believe they are capable of competing against any nation left in the competition.
That belief has been built through their performances rather than simply their results. Holding England to a goalless draw demonstrated Ghana’s defensive quality, while the victory over Panama showed the team’s ability to grind out important wins under pressure.
Even against Croatia, Ghana displayed character by fighting back after conceding the opening goal.
Those experiences have strengthened the squad mentally ahead of the knockout rounds.
Ayew believes maintaining that positive mentality will be crucial as every match from this point becomes an elimination contest.
Experienced Leaders Guiding the Squad
Jordan Ayew’s influence extends far beyond his performances on the pitch. As Ghana’s captain and most experienced attacking player, he has played a major role in keeping the squad united throughout the tournament.
Alongside senior players such as Thomas Partey, Ayew has helped create a calm atmosphere inside the dressing room despite injuries, tactical adjustments and the pressure that naturally accompanies a World Cup.
His leadership has become even more important given the number of younger players making their first appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Ayew has consistently encouraged his teammates to remain focused, work hard and trust the tactical instructions provided by Carlos Queiroz and his coaching staff.
Those leadership qualities will become increasingly valuable as Ghana enters the pressure-filled knockout stage.
