The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has revealed that the Government of Ghana distributed a total of 2,922 tickets for the Black Stars’ three group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup before bringing its special ticket-support initiative to an end.
The announcement provides clarity on one of the most discussed issues surrounding Ghana’s participation in the tournament, with many supporters seeking information on how government-supported tickets were allocated throughout the group stage.
According to a statement signed by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, the ticket allocation formed part of a national support programme designed to ensure Ghanaian supporters could attend the Black Stars’ matches and provide encouragement from the stands during the country’s World Cup campaign.
The Ministry stressed that the tickets were never intended for commercial purposes and were distributed free of charge to selected beneficiaries through an organised process involving Ghana’s diplomatic missions, recognised supporter groups and approved stakeholders.
The programme, however, officially ended after Ghana completed its group-stage fixtures, meaning fans hoping to watch the Black Stars in the knockout rounds will now have to purchase tickets through FIFA’s official sales channels.

Nearly 3,000 Tickets Distributed
In its statement, the Ministry provided a detailed breakdown of the number of tickets allocated for each of Ghana’s three Group L matches. A total of 948 tickets were distributed for the Black Stars’ opening fixture against Panama.
For the highly anticipated clash against England, the allocation increased to 1,000 tickets, reflecting the enormous interest surrounding one of the biggest matches in Ghana’s group-stage campaign.
The final group encounter against Croatia saw another 974 tickets distributed before the government concluded the support initiative. Altogether, those allocations amounted to 2,922 tickets across the three matches.
The figures offer the first official confirmation of the scale of the government’s ticket assistance programme during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Ministry noted that every ticket formed part of a coordinated national effort aimed at ensuring Ghanaian supporters were represented at each of the Black Stars’ matches.
Tickets Were Not Sold
One of the key points emphasised by the Ministry was that the tickets were not sold. Instead, they were distributed under a specially designed support programme intended to assist various categories of Ghanaian supporters attending the World Cup.
The Ministry explained that the beneficiaries included recognised supporter groups, corporate sponsors, football stakeholders and members of the Ghanaian diaspora living across the United States and Canada.
The initiative was introduced to strengthen support for the Black Stars by ensuring a visible Ghanaian presence inside stadiums during the group stage. Officials stressed that the programme was never established as a commercial venture.
Rather, it was intended to reward loyal supporters and facilitate attendance by groups considered important to Ghana’s World Cup campaign.
By making that clarification, the Ministry sought to address speculation surrounding the handling and distribution of the tickets.
Ghana’s Diplomatic Missions Played Key Role
The Ministry also explained how the ticket distribution process was organised. According to the statement, Ghana’s diplomatic missions in both the United States and Canada were heavily involved in coordinating the allocation exercise.
The embassies and consulates consulted with recognised Ghanaian community organisations and supporter groups within their respective jurisdictions before compiling beneficiary lists.
Those recommendations were then submitted through approved channels to facilitate the allocation process. Working alongside recognised football associations and other stakeholders, the missions helped identify supporters who would benefit from the programme.
Officials believe the involvement of Ghana’s foreign missions helped ensure that the process reached members of the Ghanaian community living abroad while also strengthening engagement with diaspora organisations.
The collaboration highlighted the important role Ghana’s diplomatic representatives continue to play in supporting national teams during major international tournaments.
FIFA’s Digital Ticketing System Used
Rather than issuing physical tickets, the Ministry confirmed that all successful beneficiaries received their match tickets electronically.
Distribution was carried out using FIFA’s official mobile ticketing system, which has become the standard method for ticket access during recent international tournaments.
Electronic ticketing offers several advantages, including enhanced security and reduced opportunities for ticket fraud or duplication.
Successful recipients were able to access their match tickets directly through FIFA’s mobile application after completing the necessary verification procedures.
The Ministry indicated that the digital system helped simplify distribution while ensuring all tickets remained secure and traceable throughout the process.
The use of FIFA’s official platform also aligned Ghana’s programme with tournament regulations governing ticket allocation and access.
Demand Greatly Exceeded Supply
Although almost 3,000 tickets were distributed during the group stage, the Ministry acknowledged that demand was significantly higher than the number available.
Interest from Ghanaian supporters both at home and abroad far exceeded the government’s allocation. Thousands of fans hoped to secure tickets for Ghana’s matches, particularly the high-profile encounter against England, which generated enormous excitement among supporters.
The Ministry admitted that many deserving supporters ultimately missed out because of the limited allocation. Officials noted that the overwhelming demand reflected the tremendous passion Ghanaians continue to have for the Black Stars despite recent challenges faced by the national team.
Supporters travelled from various parts of North America and beyond hoping to witness Ghana’s matches in person. Many others submitted requests through recognised supporter organisations and diplomatic missions. Unfortunately, available tickets were insufficient to satisfy every request received.
Strong Support Throughout the Tournament
The Ministry described the level of public interest as another indication of the enduring popularity of the Black Stars. Following Ghana’s encouraging performances at the tournament, enthusiasm among supporters continued to grow.
The Black Stars opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before producing an impressive defensive display to hold England to a goalless draw.
Although Ghana suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Croatia in the final group match, the Black Stars had already secured qualification for the Round of 32 under FIFA’s expanded tournament format.
Those positive performances helped generate even greater interest among supporters hoping to attend matches. The Ministry acknowledged that the passion shown by Ghanaian fans throughout the tournament had been remarkable.
Officials praised supporters both inside stadiums and around the world for standing firmly behind the national team during its World Cup journey.
