World Cup 2026: Caleb Yirenkyi speaks after snatching late win for Ghana

Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has said the move that led to his winning goal against Panama was something the team had practised many times during training.

The FC Nordsjaelland player scored late to give the Black Stars a 1-0 victory in their opening Group L match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BMO Field in Toronto.

Ghana found it difficult to break down a well-organised Panama side for most of the match, with clear scoring chances limited throughout the game.

However, their hard work paid off near the end when Yirenkyi finished a move that had been worked on repeatedly in training before the tournament.

Speaking after the game, the young midfielder said the team’s preparation helped create the winning moment.

“I think that’s why we are practising a lot. We started our preparation to get the ball to the middle. And then put it in the box.

“And then we get to run. And then the ball goes to the finish line. I think that’s what we’ve been doing,” Yirenkyi said.

The victory gives Ghana a strong start in Group L and builds confidence ahead of their next matches.

The Black Stars will face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before ending their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27.

After opening the tournament with a win, Ghana will hope to continue their good form and secure a place in the knockout stage. Continue to More Sports.
