The team will try and give the flood victims something to smile about – Carlos Queiroz
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has promised that Ghana will carry the hopes of African football into the Round of 32, insisting his players are determined to improve the continent’s record at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the elimination of Senegal and DR Congo.
The Portuguese tactician made the passionate pledge ahead of Ghana’s crucial knockout clash against Colombia in Kansas City, where the Black Stars will attempt to become one of the few African nations to reach the Round of 16.
Queiroz believes Ghana now has an even greater responsibility after watching two fellow African representatives crash out of the tournament despite producing encouraging performances.
Beyond football, the veteran coach also revealed that the devastating floods in Accra have deeply affected both him and his squad. He said the players are determined to dedicate a positive performance to the victims and provide a moment of hope for Ghanaians during a difficult period.
With a place in the Round of 16 at stake, Queiroz believes Ghana have the opportunity to inspire not only their own supporters but football fans across the African continent.

Ghana carrying Africa’s hopes
The World Cup has once again highlighted both the quality and challenges facing African teams on football’s biggest stage.
Several African nations showed they could compete with some of the world’s strongest sides, but knockout football proved unforgiving.
Following the elimination of Senegal and DR Congo, Ghana remain among the continent’s last hopes of making a deep run in the competition.
Queiroz acknowledged the significance of that responsibility and made it clear his team intends to embrace it rather than shy away from it.
“It is a challenge for us to improve the stat [of African teams], and we will do our best to make everybody back home proud,” Queiroz told Ghanaian sports journalist Gary Al-Smith.
The coach believes Ghana’s progress could help demonstrate once again that African football continues to develop and deserves greater recognition on the global stage.
Painful exits for Senegal and DR Congo
Queiroz’s comments came after two heartbreaking defeats for fellow African nations in the Round of 32.
Senegal appeared to be on course for a famous victory after racing into a 2-0 halftime lead against Belgium.
However, the West Africans were unable to hold their advantage, with Belgium producing an impressive second-half comeback to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory. DR Congo experienced similar disappointment.
They led England 1-0 during their knockout encounter and looked capable of producing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Instead, England recovered after the break to claim a 2-1 victory and eliminate the Central African nation.
Those results served as a reminder of how ruthless World Cup knockout football can be. For Queiroz, they also reinforced the importance of concentration from the opening whistle until the final minute.
Ghana hoping to extend Africa’s journey
The Black Stars now have the opportunity to keep Africa’s hopes alive. Having successfully progressed from a difficult Group L that included England, Croatia and Panama, Ghana enter the knockout rounds believing they can compete with any team remaining in the competition.
Under Queiroz, the Black Stars have built their campaign on defensive discipline, tactical organisation and resilience.
Those qualities helped Ghana collect four points during the group stage, securing qualification before their final group match against Croatia.
Although the Black Stars eventually lost 2-1 to Croatia, they had already guaranteed progression to the knockout stage thanks to earlier results. Now, Queiroz hopes his players can take another step forward by overcoming Colombia.
Flood tragedy has touched the entire squad
While preparing for one of the biggest matches of the tournament, Ghana’s players have also been following the devastating news from home.
Recent floods in Accra claimed several lives and displaced many families, leaving communities across the capital dealing with tragedy and destruction. Queiroz admitted the events have affected him personally.
“The floods have affected me personally. The team will try and give those affected something to smile about,” he said.
His emotional comments reflect the close connection the squad continues to maintain with supporters back home despite competing thousands of miles away.
Throughout the tournament, the Black Stars have repeatedly spoken about representing not just themselves but the entire nation.
Now, they hope their performance against Colombia can provide a small source of encouragement for people facing hardship in Ghana.
Football united with national emotion
Queiroz has consistently reminded his players that football is about more than results. Before travelling to Kansas City, he issued a public message expressing solidarity with flood victims, saying the entire Black Stars delegation carried the people of Accra in their hearts.
He explained that while the team remains focused on football, everyone inside the camp understands the pain many families are currently experiencing.
The coach believes representing Ghana at the World Cup also means standing with the country during difficult moments.
His players have embraced that message. Several squad members have spoken privately about their determination to produce a performance worthy of the supporters who continue to stand behind them despite the tragedy unfolding back home.
Colombia provide enormous challenge
Standing between Ghana and the Round of 16 is one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
Colombia progressed through Group K unbeaten, finishing ahead of Portugal after a series of impressive performances. The South Americans possess attacking quality, technical ability and tactical discipline throughout their squad.
Many observers now consider them genuine contenders to win the World Cup. Queiroz himself has acknowledged Colombia’s strengths while insisting they are not unbeatable.
Having previously coached the South American nation, he knows many of the players personally but has repeatedly stressed that his focus is on today’s Colombia rather than the team he once managed.
His coaching staff have spent days analysing Colombia’s recent performances, searching for areas Ghana can exploit.
Belief remains strong inside Ghana camp
Despite facing one of the tournament’s favourites, confidence remains high among the Black Stars. Captain Jordan Ayew has insisted the defeat against Croatia has not damaged morale.
Several players have spoken positively about the opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s strongest teams.
Queiroz has also encouraged his players to trust the defensive structure and tactical discipline that helped them reach the knockout rounds.
The Portuguese coach believes Ghana possess enough quality to compete with any nation when they remain organised and concentrated.
History within touching distance
Victory over Colombia would carry enormous significance for Ghanaian football. It would send the Black Stars into the Round of 16 for the first time since their memorable 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa.
That achievement would also ensure Africa continues to have representation deeper into the tournament. For Queiroz, however, the motivation extends beyond statistics or historical milestones.
His players now carry the hopes of millions of Ghanaians, many of whom continue to recover from the devastating floods at home.
They also represent a continent eager to see one of its nations challenge for football’s greatest prize. The Ghana coach knows the task ahead will be extremely difficult.
Colombia have demonstrated throughout the tournament why they are considered among the strongest teams remaining. But Queiroz believes his players have every reason to believe.
With discipline, determination and unity, the Black Stars hope not only to keep their own World Cup dream alive but also to give Ghana and Africa a performance they can proudly remember during one of the nation’s most challenging moments.
