Co-hosts Mexico began the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a strong 2-0 win over South Africa in an exciting Group A opening match. The game became chaotic, with three red cards and a tense ending at a full Estadio Azteca.
In front of 80,824 excited fans in Mexico City, El Tri got the perfect start to their home World Cup campaign. However, the match will be remembered not only for the football but also for the many disciplinary problems.
Mexico controlled most of the game and made the most of a South African team that ended the match with only nine players. South Africa’s hopes of making a comeback disappeared when experienced midfielder Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct. Mexico captain César Montes was also shown a red card late in stoppage time.
The win moves Mexico to the top of Group A and gives Javier Aguirre’s team an important early boost as they try to move on from the tournament’s opening stage.
